Do you choose to track your runs in miles or kilometres? Either way, here are some handy conversions to help you easily understand different distances.

First of all, the basics. 

One kilometre is 1,000 metres

One kilometre is 0.62 mile

One mile is 1,609 metres

TRACK & INTERVAL DISTANCE CONVERSIONS

On the running track, or for shorter reps, the conversion is as follows.

While 1 mile is 1,609m, for training purposes it’s generally considered accurate to regard 400m as ¼ mile and 800m as ½ mile, and so on. So if you have 800m reps planned and you work in miles, then 0.5 mile is close enough.

Here’s a table for common distances in kilometres to miles, up to a marathon distance. Some of the easier numbers to multiply are 5km which is 3.1 miles (so 15km is 9.3 miles, and so on), or 8km which is 5 miles.
