Running Resolutions & Goals For 2025

There comes a time towards the end of the year when talk over lunch in the TRC office turns to what’s next. What are the things we want to take on in 2025? And how can we be better runners next year?

Here are our resolutions and running goals for 2025.

OUR RUNNING RESOLUTIONS FOR 2025

Whether that’s more time in the gym, or less pressure and more fun, here’s what the team wants to focus on this year. And if you’re looking for your own running resolutions for 2025, here’s a few suggestions.

  • Run with other people more often, or encourage friends (who maybe aren’t yet runners) to join you. Maybe start a lunchtime run club at work?
  • Sign up to (more) local races
  • Focus on your mental health and how running can help with that (find time to run in nature, or take the pressure off by running for fun and not for fast times)
  • Slow down! Because we know that running slow helps us to run faster
  • Run strides more often because strides and hill sprints are easy to do and they can really help you improve as a runner
  • Focus on weaknesses: that could be getting in the gym, working on mobility, making time for a warm up and cool down, getting better at fuelling, focusing on sleep and recovery, or all of the above!
  • Be more consistent with running
  • Listen to your body more, so rest if you’re tired, take a day off if that niggle flares up, walk instead of run if that feels better for you one day

Rick wants 2025 to be a year of consistency. “A year where I have a strong base level to step up when the challenge presents itself. I’m happy with my strength, but want to go a bit faster and get myself to a consistent fitness where I can enjoy the run itself a little more, as well as the endorphins afterwards. If you are in this category you will know what I mean.”

Sarah: “I want to start believing in myself more! I think I’ve reached the point in my running where every ‘big’ goal I’ve set for myself I don’t really believe I can do. So I want to try and work on that barrier and start believing that I am that runner and if I put in the hard work, I can achieve the scary goals I’ve set for myself.”

Sarah also wants to stick with the gym. “Genuinely, I’ve got more satisfaction from going to the gym in the second half of 2024 than I have from running. So I want to stick with this new hobby and keep trying to get stronger even when I’m back training with running again.”

Mo’s running resolution is to enjoy more runs, and part of that means not checking stats for every run and making comparisons to where he thinks he should be.

Jess: “I want to build on strength and gradually build a routine of going to the gym to fit alongside my running, and complement my running with cross training and use this to work towards a triathlon.”

Tom wants to enjoy running more, and stop feeling the pressure. He also wants to hit the gym at least once a week.

Andy wants to be more consistent with strength and conditioning, aiming for two sessions per week.

Mark wants to do more races in 2025 but do most of them for fun, instead of always trying to get new PBs. He wants to focus more on strength training and doing running drills, focus less on stubbornly trying to run certain mileage every week, and learn how to get out the door for a morning run without faffing for over an hour beforehand.

Stevie wants to both encourage and generally run more often with friends that are completely new to running.

Owen wants to dedicate more time to mobility and core exercises specifically to help with tight hips and hamstrings. He also wants to drink a bit less alcohol to help improve his sleep, and reduce the amount of processed foods he consumes.

OUR RUNNING GOALS FOR 2025

Rick had, in his own words, a “coming of age” running year in 2024. He found out where he’s comfortable, and figured out what he wants to do with that. For him, that means more half marathons and aiming for a 22 minute 5km.

Sarah’s main running goal at the beginning of the year is a sub-20 minute 5km, which is “the biggest goal I’ve had since I’ve started running.” It took her two years to break 25 minutes, “so no matter how long it takes… sub-20 I’m coming for you!”

Mo’s big goal for 2025 is to run a championship qualifying time for the London Marathon. That’s under 2:38.

Jess has a very big goal, which she talked about in a recent podcast (you can watch that below). She plans on running 42 marathons in 2025. She also hopes to take on a triathlon.

Tom has his sights on a sub-25 minute 5km, and at the complete other end of the running spectrum, he wants to run a trail ultramarathon.

Andy has unfinished business with the half marathon and marathon, and would like to run PBs for both distances in 2025.

Mark wants to build towards a 2:49 marathon, hopefully via a 1:20 half marathon, plus see how fast he can run a trail 50km.

Stevie’s goals for 2025 include running a qualifying time for the 2026 London Marathon (sub-2:55), completing a multi-stage ultra marathon, a sub-1:25 half marathon and sub-17 5km.

Owen is aiming for a marathon PB in April 2025 when he takes on the Newport Marathon. “I will also be taking on a personal challenge of running from North Wales to South Wales in 3/4 days, raising money for charity in memory of my Dad who passed away from cancer in 2021.”

Here’s Jess, Sarah and Rick talking about how to set running goals.
