The 2025 London Marathon Aims To Be The World’s Largest Marathon!

The TCS London Marathon is just six weeks away and as runners reach their peak training weeks, London Marathon Events has announced that the 2025 London Marathon is hoping to break the record for the world’s largest marathon, with more than 56,000 runners set to finish the race.
We’ve already been promised the most exciting elite field in marathon history, with many of the world’s greatest runners preparing to race the London Marathon on Sunday 27 April in what could be a record-setting day.
It follows the record-breaking number of people who entered the ballot to run this year’s race, which was a whopping 840,000, making it the world’s most popular marathon. Plus the race is consistently the world’s largest annual one-day fundraising event (it’s raised more than £1.3bn for charity since 1981!). Now the London Marathon wants the record for most finishers in a marathon.
In order to do that, it needs to beat the current record of 55,646 which was how many people finished the 2024 New York City Marathon. London had 53,980 finishers in 2024 and hopes to see more than 2,000 extra runners pick up a medal on The Mall.
SHARE YOUR LONDON MARATHON MEMORIES
To celebrate the 45th running of the race, and what is set to be a record-breaking year, the London Marathon will be hosting a special celebration in central London on Friday 25 April. They are inviting everyone who has taken part in the London Marathon since it began in 1981 to submit a photograph or video of their Marathon Day experience, which may be showcased as part of a digital display which people can enter and view for free.
To submit a photograph or video, all past London Marathon participants can post their Marathon memories on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #MyLondonMarathon for a chance to be included.
THE MOST INCLUSIVE MARATHON
Hugh Brasher, the CEO of London Marathon Events, said: “The 45th edition is a landmark year for us, and it would be wonderful to mark that by becoming the biggest marathon ever staged anywhere in the world. Marathon Day is an extraordinary day when communities come together to celebrate the very best of humanity as tens of thousands of participants take on the legendary 26.2 mile challenge from Greenwich to The Mall and raise tens of millions for charity on the way.”
Brasher added: “Celebrating the 45th edition gives us the opportunity to look back at the changes the London Marathon has experienced through the years. The very first edition my father and John Disley organised in 1981 was an incredible event but it was enjoyed by just 6,255 people, the vast majority of whom were male club runners. This year’s event will be the most inclusive London Marathon in history, with more women, more people from ethnically diverse backgrounds and more people with disabilities taking part than ever before. We are proud that people of all ages, all backgrounds and all abilities want to be part of this incredible event. Our ambition is to make the TCS London Marathon the most inclusive marathon in the world and truly reflects the population of this great city.”
The 2025 London Marathon is going to be a big one and we can’t wait to see it!
